ELA/SCIENCE:
This week we are working on the fifth story in our Reading Street Program called "Life in the Forest". It contains a story line that focuses on how animals and plants live homogeneously in nature. During the course of this story we will also be focusing on the author’s voice in writing. As a final writing piece for this week, we will be taking on the “voice” of an animal and writing a descriptive paragraph to see if our peers will be able to figure out “who” we are based upon our voice and information that they have been given by us… the author. It’s always fun to make a guess based upon the facts we have been given.
MATH:
We are starting Unit 5 in our Everyday Math program where we will be focusing on Place Value concepts and comparisons, Relational symbols of greater than, less than and equal to, as well as measurement and data.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will be learning all about the history and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as his intended message for all to learn from.
SPELLING REMINDER:
Every pre-test will remain on Wednesday and in the same format as you are familiar with. However, our end of the week “official” spelling test will be a little different. It will include all of the 12 words on our original list and a dictation sentence that is indicative of the particular phonics skills, high frequency words, and sentence structures we have been learning about in first grade. The hope is to provide you with some insight into your child’s learning. I am looking for spacing, punctuation, spelling of words we have practiced, tracking of sentence structure etc. Every test is corrected with each individual student so we take that moment to edit together with reminders when needed. For example, I may be looking for and understanding that sentences and proper nouns should always start with a capital letter. This is just another way that your child has to revisit their learning and expand upon it with me while still offering you a “peek” at what they need to continue to work on.
As always the spelling lists will remain the same, the amazing words will continue to be tested for those who earn a 100% on their final test every Friday and have been practicing them on a regular basis.
The dictation sentence will not be shared at the beginning of the week. I do not want this to be something that students need to memorize and recount for a test. My goal is to assess what they have internalized as a part of their daily learning environment and are able to apply independently in their writing.
Remember to practice those spelling words every evening to ensure a solid reading and writing vocabulary to draw from.
Thank you for everything you do!
